My great grandfather, Everard Alvin Cox had a team of two draft horses. They were big old guys, not Clydesdales, but approximately the same size. He was able to hire them out for $2.00/day because he had a team. He loved those horses, and they kept his family well fed. It was a heartbreaking day when one of them fell in a ditch and broke its leg and had to be put down. My uncle Clair said my great grandfather was heartbroken over not just the loss of income, but a dear daily companion.
I love to see the Clydesdales when they come to town, because even though they are just for show, they make me feel closer to family.
